Fairfax, Virginia is an independent city.  It is situated within Fairfax County and is in the general Washington Metropolitan area. It is 5 miles northwest of Burke, Virginia and 17 miles west of Washington DC. The population was 22,565 as of the 2010 Census. 


Forbes Magazine ranked Fairfax No.3 in the “Top 25 Places to Live Well” in May 2009. Forbes commended Fairfax for the high median employee salary, high business sole owners and sound public school system.


In the 1700’s, it was settled by farmers from the Virginia’s Tidewater region. Fairfax was named after Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron.  King Charles awarded him five million acres in Northern Virginia. Originally, the Fairfax town was founded by Richard Ratcliffe, who was killed in 1861 during the American Civil War. It later became an independent city in 1961.


Fairfax is a culturally rich and diversified and has lots of amenities to offer its residents including, golf courses, parks, restaurants, and shopping.  Come join the Bluegrass Barn Concerts and listen to Appalachian Mountain Music at the Frying Pan Park on seven different dates from October through April. Sully Station has its Historic All Hallows’ Eve in October that features story telling, games, pumpkin crafts, cooking demonstrations on a 1794 open hearth kitchen. Chill out at the Fairfax Ice Arena and develop new ice skating skills.. Have a fantastic and tasty fish fry!  Travel a short distance to Lake Fairfax Park in Reston which will be stocked with 1200 pounds of trout
