Manassas City

Manassas is part of the greater Washington Metropolitan Area with a population of 37,821 as of 2010. The area is ideal for commuters to Reston, Tysons and Washington DC as it is adjacent to I 66 and also Route 28 runs north and south to Centreville. Commuters also can choose to ride the rail system too. Manassas is well served by the Norfolk Southern, the Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak.  The VRE is utilized greatly for people who work in Alexandria and Washington D C. It stops in two locations within Manassas, e.g. City of Manassas and the Manassas Regional Airport. Travelers can also utilize the Amtrak Cardinal, Northeast Regional  and Crescent lines who wish to go to New York, Chicago and New Orleans.


Manassasis rich in history. It was incorporated in 1873. This small railroad junction area became a major benefit during the Civil War as they led to Richmond, Washington DC and the Shenandoah Valley. This was the first time a large scale military use of rails was ever implemented.  The First Battle of Manassas also known as the First Battle of Bull Run was fought in July 1861 and the Second Battle of Manassas was fought from August 28 th to 30 th, 1862.  The area was generally in the hands of the Union Army despite these two Civil War victories.


There are five elementary schools, one middle school and a single high school serves Manassas.  Whereas, George Mason University has a satellite campus in Manassas as does Northern Virginia Community College and Strayer College. The area has many recreational parks, including Manassas National Battle Park and the Stonewall Memorial Gardens, Bull Run Regional Park, Ben Lomond Regional Park, Fairmont Park, Rosemont-Lewis Park, Signal Hill Park, Ellis Barron Park and Stonewall Park to name a few.
